SD To Consider Equal Benefits Ordinance

S.D. To Consider Equal Benefits Ordinance

Companies that contract with the city of San Diego may soon have to make a significant change to their benefits package.

A city council committee has unanimously recommended San Diego enact an Equal Benefits Ordinance. It would require companies that contract with the city to offer the registered domestic partners of employees the same benefits as employee spouses. Councilman Todd Gloria sponsored the measure.

“This will bring the city’s contracting practices in line with non-discrimination laws and match our existing domestic partnership benefits,” he said.

Gloria says the law would not affect companies that don’t offer benefits at all or offer them only to employees. The state of California along with several cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento have similar laws. The issue will now be considered by the full council.
