SD Councilwoman Frye Condemns CCDC Bill

The San Diego City Council publicly responded Tuesday to controversial legislation involving the Center City Development Corporation. The state recently passed a bill lifting the limit on how much tax revenue CCDC can collect. The city was in the process of considering whether to lift the cap.

Councilwoman Donna Frye wanted to the council to send a letter to the Governor asking him not to sign the legislation. That idea was ultimately rejected. Frye said not doing anything sends the wrong message.

“We basically just said we don’t care if you follow the process. You can do what you want to us because if you do what you want to us, we’ll just roll over. And we don’t really care about the public,” she said.

Frye asked that CCDC prepare a report within 30 days outlining how the deal with the state legislature happened and who was involved.

But other members of the council weren’t concerned about the legislation. They said the bill means the city won’t have to waste time and money to lift the cap.

Critics of the deal speculate the cap was lifted in order to funnel millions of dollars toward a new downtown Chargers stadium. Supporters of the bill say the money will go toward many different development projects.
