New campaign finance reports show that Jerry Brown spent about $36.5 million in his successful bid to become governor of California, defeating the highest-spending candidate for statewide office in the country's history.
In reports filed Monday with the secretary of state's office, Brown's campaign reported spending $29 million on TV and radio ads placed by a Georgia-based Democratic advertising firm, LUC Media. Brown's chief campaign consultant, Steve Glazer, was paid $235,000.
Brown also was aided by at least $26 million in spending by outside groups, mostly labor unions, in last year's campaign.
His Republican opponent, former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman, spent $144 million from her personal fortune and at least another $30 million that she raised from donors. Whitman's campaign had not yet filed its final report Monday.
