State lawmakers haven’t agreed yet to call a June Special Election but Gov. Jerry Brown is already considering having everyone vote by mail.
“It’s cheaper, easier for people and half the electorate is now used to that,” Brown said.
Brown wants to ask voters to extend temporary tax increases. He needs legislators’ support to put that on the ballot.
California’s secretary of state points out this would be the state’s first all mail ballot. She said factors to consider include educating those who have never voted by mail.
If the state legislature calls a special election in June, Brown’s proposals wouldn’t be the only ones for voters to decide. An initiative calling for a tobacco tax increase and a measure to change state lawmakers’ term limits would also be moved to that ballot.
