Governor Cracks Down On Salary, Travel Advances

Governor Brown has issued an Executive Order that asks agencies and departments to recover millions in salary and travel advances owed by state employees.

A 2009 audit by the State Controller’s Office found that 13 million dollars in advances hadn’t been collected at 11 state agencies.

Brown calls the situation “shocking” and says it reinforces the “worst stereotype of ineffective and inefficient government.”

Brown has ordered salary and travel advances cleared within 30 days through an expense claim. He says if they’re not, the amount should be deducted from the employee’s next paycheck.

Brown also recently ordered a hiring freeze and cut back on state cell phones and state cars.
