Redevelopment agencies were drastically altered in the recently passed state budget. The agencies can only continue to operate if they pay a bigger share of revenue to local schools. For the city of San Diego, that amount is nearly $70 million this year and $16 million every year after that.
Mayor Jerry Sanders said he supports plans by The California League of Cities to file a lawsuit against the state challenging the redevelopment plan. But in the meantime, he’s urging the city council to buy into the system so some form of redevelopment can continue.
Supporters say redevelopment has transformed parts of the city. The council will decide whether to go along with Sanders at a special meeting tonight.
Affordable housing activists have expressed concern that some of the money used to pay the $70 million tab may come from funds designated for building affordable housing in the city.
