One year after a San Diego City College student was brutally murdered inside a campus bathroom, the suspect -- her estranged husband -- remains a fugitive.
Armando Gabriel Perez was charged with killing Diana Gonzalez days after her body was found. But weeks before the murder, Perez allegedly kidnapped, raped and choked the 19-year-old. Police arrested him. But District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis did not press charges.
After Gonzalez’s murder, Dumanis said the original case lacked proof even though a police report showed injuries and evidence of choking. Dumanis promised a review of the case but later declined to make it public.
Dumanis won’t comment on the open investigation. The victim's sister Janette Gonzalez said the DA hasn’t shared the reason with the family, either.
“If they really don’t have nothing to hide," Gonzalez said, "if they really think they did their job right, they should have said something.”
Dumanis would not answer questions about the case citing an ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, a vigil is planned at City College Tuesday evening.
Professor Larissa Dorman said it’s an opportunity for the family and students to speak about domestic violence.
“I think that students feel a great sense of injustice and concern regarding their ability to have access to protection in these types of cases, she said.
Police believe Diana’s husband is in Mexico and is involved with the Sinaloa drug cartel.
