Public officials rely on planning groups for input from community residents on development projects, but San Diego County Supervisors are considering limiting the groups' influence after receiving complaints from developers.
The Board of Supervisors heard a proposal today to restrict planning groups as part of a streamlined regulatory process developers are pushing.
Ivan Fox is a Senior Principal with San Dieguito Engineering, and he says he has found it impossible to work with certain groups.
"In many cases, these planning groups have individuals who have personal agendas. They're not representing the community," he said at Wednesday morning's meeting.
"We sometimes refer to them as CAVEs, Citizens Against Virtually Everything," Fox said.
Supervisor Dianne Jacob worries a few county groups with problems are unfairly giving all 26 bad reputations.
"I do not support eliminating the planning groups, and I will not support gutting in any way the effectiveness of these [groups]," said Jacob.
The supervisors have delayed a decision on the matter until Feb. 29, 2012.
