California law shields primary caregivers who grow, buy, or distribute medical pot from federal prosecution. Those caregivers are also allowed to receive reasonable compensation for their services.
Bay Area Senator Mark Leno, a Democrat, wants to extend those protections to collectives, cooperatives and the stores and delivery services they employ to distribute medical pot.
Democrats on the Senate Public Safety committee voted for Leno’s bill. They say the measure will clarify state law, something California’s Attorney General has asked the legislature to do.
The bill now heads for a full Senate vote
