Father Joe’s Villages will open an emergency winter shelter for San Diego’s homeless population, the organization announced Friday. Father Joe's said it is partnering with St. Vincent de Paul Village on the shelter, and will use funds from the San Diego Housing Commission.
The shelter will be open beginning tonight through Monday, January 14. Overnight temperatures over the weekend are expected to dip into the 30s.
The shelter will have 166 beds, but Father Joe’s Villages also said it will do "everything in its power not to turn anyone away."
“These could be life-threatening overnight conditions,” said Sister Patricia Cruise, the president and CEO of Father Joe’s Villages, in a statement. “It is critical that we get every person possible off of the streets and into shelter over the next few nights."
The emergency shelter will be located in the Paul Mirable Center dining room on the St. Vincent de Paul Village campus at 1501 Imperial Ave. in downtown San Diego.
Intake will begin at 4 p.m. in the Paul Mirable Center. Dinner will be served daily from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and breakfast will be at 6 a.m. the following morning. Everyone must leave by 7:30 a.m.
A permanent shelter in downtown was supposed to be finished by Dec. 1, but it is still not completed.
