San Diego City Hall is expected to be bustling with rallies and protests today as embattled Mayor Bob Filner is due to return to work.
Filner supporters have planned a "Standing with Mayor Filner and Due Process" rally at noon to argue that the recall campaign against him is being carried out by his political opponents and urge an end to “public mockery of the judicial system,” according to a news release..
Opponents are holding a “Filner Not Welcome Back” rally at 11 a.m. at the Civic Center Plaza.
Meanwhile, former mayoral candidate Carl Demaio is holding a news conference this morning at City Hall to make an announcement regarding recall efforts.
A signature-gathering campaign that kicked off Sunday to recall the mayor continues today. Organizers need to turn in nearly 102,000 valid signatures by Sept. 26 to get the recall onto the ballot.
Mayor Filner’s whereabouts remain unknown. His last public appearances were in late July. That's when he held a news conference to announce that he would be undergoing two weeks of behavioral therapy.
