Seven El Camino High students and the driver of their school bus were injured today when the vehicle collided with a car on a North County street and toppled over, authorities said.
The coach was northbound on North El Camino Real in Oceanside when a small sedan pulled out of a driveway in front of a mobile home park near Douglas Drive and struck it shortly before 11:30 a.m., according police.
The car "tangled'' with one of wheels on the driver's side of the bus, causing the larger vehicle to skid out of control and overturn, police Sgt. Jeff Brandt said.
Emergency crews airlifted one student to a trauma center and took six others and the bus driver to other hospitals, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The patients' injuries, none of which were considered life-threatening,ranged from bumps and bruises to at least one broken bone.
The rest of the teens were transported back to their school.
The driver of the sedan, described as an elderly woman, was uninjured. Preliminary evidence suggested that she was at fault in the crash, Brandt said.
At the time of the accident, the students were on their way back to campus after taking part in a tutoring program at an elementary school.
