A San Diego-based policy think tank called today on the city of San Diego to launch an investigation into excess methane accumulating at the Miramar Landfill.
The Center for Policy Initiatives sent a memo to Mayor Jerry Sanders, members of the City Council and other administrators, asking for an investigation into violations by a private contractor, Fortistar Methane Group.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported last weekend that the city and the contractor have been cited with more than two dozen violations for allowing too much volatile methane gas to gather underground and in the air at the landfill.
Tom Gesicki, the president of Fortistar -- based in New York -- told the newspaper that his company has quickly addressed the problems.
The CPI also urged that an environmental management system that was removed by the city from the landfill last spring be reinstated.
