Police say the body of a baby girl has been found near a Southern California home where a gunman wounded a police officer before the house burned.
El Cajon police Sgt. Mark Coit said Monday that the girl's body was found in the suspected gunman's truck near the burning home northeast of San Diego. The girl had been shot in the head.
Authorities are trying to determine if the body is that of the 1-year-old daughter of 32-year-old Kevin Collier.
Police suspect Collier shot Officer Jarred Slocum in the head Sunday evening after police responded to a report of a gunman. The 28-year-old officer is in critical but stable condition.
Coit says Collier texted family members Sunday to say he'd killed his daughter and his mother-in-law, who remains missing.
Police believe a body found in the burned house may be Collier's. A search continues.
