The Town of Guadalupe will consider a resolution tonight that calls for the immediate resignation of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Other elected officials have also called for the sheriff to resign this week, after national media outlets began reporting on the more than 400 sex-crime investigations his office mishandled between 2005 and 2007.

Councilman Andrew Sanchez will introduce the resolution, but it was drafted by Randy Parraz - the same organizer who successfully led a campaign to recall former State Senator Russell Pearce. If the council passes the resolution, it will be the first governmental entity to join the chorus of elected officials calling for new leadership in the sheriff's office.

The East Valley Tribune first reported on the botched sex-crime investigations in 2008, but the story didn't gain national traction until Associated Press reporter Jacques Billeud re-visted the issue earlier this week.

Arpaio has told reporters he has no intention of resigning. But Parraz says: "The recall has opened a lot of doors."
