Deputies and officers throughout San Diego County will be out in force this New Year's holiday weekend to catch suspected drunken drivers, sheriff's officials announced today.
The sheriff's department plans to operate a checkpoint in the community of Sabre Springs from about 7 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday, in which drivers will be checked for signs of impairment and proper licensing, according to sheriff's Lt. Jose Sanchez.
Checkpoints have proven to be an effective tool in reducing the number of people hurt of killed in drunken driving crashes, Sanchez said.
A New Year's Eve saturation patrol is planned for Pacific Beach, as well, Sanchez said.
"We want to send a message to the public this New Year's weekend to drive sober or get pulled over,'' Sanchez said. "This is the time of the year to spend with family and friends, not in jail or in a hospital bed.''
