Just a few days after Escondido students started classes, city police today issued a reminder of the 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew times for people under 18 years old.
The purpose of the curfew ordinance, which was moved up from 11 p.m. last month, was to ensure juveniles were not out during hours when they could be victimized or get into trouble, Escondido police Lt. James Stuard said in a written statement.
"The purpose of the curfew law is not to be zero tolerance and arrest every juvenile who is out after 10 p.m.,'' Stuard said.
Stuard said the curfew had a few exceptions that included trips to or from work, traveling in a vehicle on the interstate and running an errand for a parent or guardian.
Those who were involved in an emergency, were with a parent or other responsible adult or were exercising a constitutionally protected First Amendment right also would be exempt.
