San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis hopes to minimize the threat posed by people who prey on children online. She said that threat is increasing right now in San Diego County.
Dumanis said her office dealt with 60 cases in the past year. That's twice the number her office handled the year before. Dumanis said adults are using the internet to victimize young people. The district attorney hopes free computer monitoring software will help clue parents in.
"Parents are not as savvy with the internet as their children," said Marisa Detelio of the District Attorney's office. "And so, there's a digital divide between the parents and the kids. And we're hoping that this can help bridge that digital divide so that parents can understand a little bit more about what goes on on the internet and that's the only way you can keep your kids safe."
The free software can monitor chat, photos, emails and videos transmitted to a home computer. It can also notify parents by email when objectionable material pops up. The software is available at any of the district attorney offices.
