Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon officials are increasing security measures this weekend, about six weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and injured dozens more.
The race, now in its 16th year, starts early Sunday morning and covers 26.2 miles through the heart of San Diego. Organizers created a new route for the marathon and half marathon runs imposed new road closures and other safety measures at the start and finish lines.
"We're definitely adding more private security and uniformed police," said Scott Dickey of the Competitor Group, which organizes the marathon.
What won't change is the rock-and-roll music played at every mile along the run, as well as the large number of personnel lining the route to help any one of the estimated 30,000 runners expected to compete Sunday.
All 50 states and more than 30 countries will be represented during the race. Proceeds from the marathon will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
