Arraignment Delayed For San Diego State Suspect Accused In Assault

The case against a San Diego State University student suspected of sexually assaulting a woman during a party near the campus remained under review Thursday.

Francisco Paiva Sousa, 20, was initially scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon but District Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Walker said that the case had been taken off the court calendar.

He said the investigation is continuing, and the case remains under review for the possible filing of criminal charges. Sousa was taken into custody about 2:15 p.m. on Dec. 9, but has since bailed out of jail, according to university police.

The alleged assault was reported at a home in the 5000 block of College Avenue on Dec. 7, after the unnamed woman identified Sousa as her alleged assailant, according to police.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
