Social media is so popular, health insurers are starting to get in on the act. Blue Shield of California has launched an on-line forum that allows members to share their health care experiences.
Blue Shield's forum is called Ask and Answer. Members are invited to answer each others questions and share their knowledge on health care topics. Subject areas include first aid, women's health, and allergies.
Blue Shield officials say all content will be posted, even negative comments about the company.
The company says it wants members to be able to tap into the wisdom of the community. But the insurer adds the information is not meant to replace a doctor's advice.
Health care reform will create millions of new customers for insurers over the next few years. Companies say they'll need to tap into social media to better market their products.
