A bill aimed at increasing transparency for pet insurance has cleared a key fiscal committee in the California Legislature.
Democratic Assemblyman Dave Jones wrote the measure. He says right now it’s not always clear what a pet owner is actually getting from a policy. Jones says his measure would change that.
“Make sure that the purveyors of pet insurance provide complete information in regard to schedules of costs that’ll be covered as well as pre-existing conditions and all the sorts of things frankly that we’ve been debating on human health care,” said Jones.
The bill would require pet insurance companies to post the relevant information online. Jones’ office says the new regulations would cost the Department of Insurance about $86,000 a year.
The bill heads next to the full Senate floor. It also has to go back to the Assembly for approval.
Jones is also running for insurance commissioner.
