On Friday, July 25, Songwriter Sanctuary will host a special edition performance of its monthly series in celebration of Disability Pride Month featuring artists with lived experiences and/or deep ties to the disability community, including Espi Love, The Bella Lunas, and Miranda Ramos with Dylan Razwick. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. But the problem isn’t disability itself; it’s the ableism (both overt and unintentional) baked into our spaces and systems. Through story and song, we’ll explore how access, care, and inclusion can create a better world for all of us - because anyone can become disabled at any time, and increased access is a lifelong practice! About the Artists Miranda Ramos: (accompanied by Dylan Razwick): Two-time 2024 Best of San Diego Winner in the categories of Best Country Musician & Singer/Songwriter and 2025 San Diego Music Award Nominee Miranda Ramos is a one of a kind artist who believes that a song isn't just sung, it must be performed. Drawing inspiration from her County and Rock roots, Miranda's songwriting is honest and relatable. She performs with her full band, as an acoustic duo or trio covering top 40 music and originals in the county genre with some pop, rock, and alternative hits thrown in (because why not?), and is the lead female vocalist in ALT2K San Diego's Premier Alt Rock Cover Band. The Bella Lunas: Kismet brought The Bella Lunas together in San Diego, California in 2022 and the vibrant trio immediately bonded over their love of music, creativity and American Sign Language. Rhea, a versatile singer-songwriter and ASL Interpreter, showcases her powerful, raw musical talent and exceptional vocals. Sheena, a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult), brings her velvety vocals and passion for perfectly blended harmonies. Lily, a Deaf artist, wowed the other ladies with her unique ASL rhythmic renditions of visual music. Rhea and Sheena's voices and instruments blend together in angelic harmonies, weaving intricate patterns of sound that captivate audiences. Yet it is Lily, a Deaf artist and performer, who introduces a completely new dimension with American Sign Language. They are graceful together with the music as it creates a mesmerizing experience you can see, hear, and feel. Espi Love: Espi Love is a local poet who residing on traditional Kumeyaay land (San Diego, CA). They're also a vocalist, actress, model, and competitive dancer, and crochet artist. Espi believes in art as a form of not only creative expression but protest, resistance, whimsy in a world that tells us to leave our playfulness behind. Sherry Hopwood will direct an ensemble cast in bringing this groundbreaking piece of lesbian history to life - a powerful play by Dian Schaffhauser that celebrates the vibrant and resilient lesbian community in San Diego from 1970 to 2000. This production is more than just a performance; it's a tribute to the stories, struggles, and triumphs of those who helped pave the way for LGBTQ+ rights. Based on hundreds of oral interviews, The Lesbians of San Diego has been dedicated to documenting the stories of local lesbians through an oral history project. This production is the next evolution of that work, ensuring that these narratives are not just archived, but embodied, experienced, and honored in a way that makes history feel immediate and alive. This play is more than a performance. It is an act of historical reclamation, an assertion of presence, and a feminist insistence that the contributions of lesbians to our collective liberation will not be erased or forgotten. These are the stories that may never have reached a newspaper or the public eye, yet they are the stories that created an incredible culture of art, music, political activism, health advocacy and more - pushing the boundaries and carving out a safe place for our community. Indigenous comic authors and artists will share their rich traditions and storytelling through their comics at California’s first-ever INDIGI-CON, held Friday, July 25 and Sunday, July 27 at UC San Diego Park & Market in downtown San Diego, 1100 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92101. The event and its family-friendly programming are free and open to the public, but registration is required. Gyedu Blay Ambolley is a musical luminary hailing from Ghana, West Africa, with a staggering 29 albums under his belt. Known affectionately as the "Simigwa Do Man,” Ambolley’s musical journey began in the vibrant port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana. His early fascination with music blossomed into a lifelong passion. From mastering his father’s flute at the tender age of eight, to honing his guitar skills under the mentorship of “Uncle Bonku," Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor, Ambolley’s musical odyssey has been nothing short of extraordinary. This all led to Ambolley becoming a musical life force and exploding on the scene in 1973 with a jazzy highlife sound called "SIMIGWA-DO." His name has become synonymous with Simigwa music and dance. Coming of age amidst the zenith of Ghana’s highlife era, Ambolley emerged as a pivotal figure in its evolution, lending his talents to esteemed bands such as Houghas Extraordinaires, Meridians Of Tema and Ghana Broadcasting Band. It was during this time that he caught the attention of his compatriot and friend, Ebo Taylor, who recruited Ambolley to be a member of the Uhuru Dance Band. This all lead to a transformative journey to Nigeria in 1973, where they shared the stage with the legendary Fela Kuti at his renowned Shrine venue. 1975 Debut Album "Simigwa": Gyedu Blay Ambolley’s groundbreaking debut solo album, released in 1975, stands as a cornerstone of Ghanaian music history - with one of the most iconic album covers! "Simigwa" stands as Ambolley’s magnum opus, a masterpiece fusing together the rich tapestry of highlife, afrobeat, folk and funk. The album is a true testament to Ambolley’s unparalleled artistry written and produced in collaboration with the legend Ebo Taylor. Ambolley not only embraces his musical roots but also pioneers the fusion of Ghanaian highlife with soul and funk influences from across the Atlantic. With "Simigwa," Ambolley seized the opportunity to showcase his own musical prowess and embark on a journey of experimentation.
