San Diego Mission Bay Resort and San Diego Pickleball are thrilled to celebrate National Pickleball Day with an action-packed pickleball social for players of all levels from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 10. Grab your paddles and your pickleball pals and join us for an afternoon of festivities including raffles, bites, beverages and beyond! We’ll be hosting two (2) two-hour sessions on all of our courts that are open to 40 people per session with players on the sideline to rotate in/out to maximize playing time for all. On Friday, August 30, join us at the charming Normal Heights United Church for a special edition of our Songwriter Sanctuary series. This evening features the talents of Emily Afton, Julianna Zachariou, and Veronica May, hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Emily Afton is a queer multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and performer with roots across California, including Oakland, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Her nostalgia-infused alt-pop, influenced by artists like Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean, and Robyn, has been praised by NPR as "wonderful, wonderful electro-pop that’s weary of life but positive." Emily's music has captivated audiences, including a 40,000-strong crowd at the San Francisco Women's March. Her music, including her popular song ‘Lost,’ has been featured on TV shows like Riverdale and Batwoman, and she has toured with Third Eye Blind. Emily is currently releasing new singles from her upcoming second full-length album, with the latest, 'Running out of Time,' accompanied by a striking music video exploring themes of heartbreak and self-preservation. Julianna Zachariou is a San Diego-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose unique blend of pop, folk, rock, indie and Americana has garnered over 8 million streams online. Aside from her solo project, she also contributes to the band Echobaby with friend, bandmate, and co-writer Josh Flowers. On the heels of her latest SDMA-nominated album "Hero of Your Heart," Julianna is currently raising funds for her next collection of work. Veronica May is a vibrant and multi-talented musician known for her electric guitar riffs and unique acoustic sounds. Living with Bipolar 1, she uses her music to break down stigmas around mental health. Her album "Awakened" is a testament to her versatility, blending the influences of artists like Alabama Shakes and James Taylor with her own powerful voice. Collaborating with talents like Jason Mraz, Veronica's mission is to inspire and uplift, offering hope and understanding through her music to those who feel unheard. Join us on Friday, July 26 at Normal Heights United as Songwriter Sanctuary continues a stellar summer lineup featuring the finest songwriters in San Diego. This month, Aaron Bowen, Angel René Wilson, and Francis Blume will share original music performed in a Nashville-style round hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. A full-time honors English major and law student at San Diego Mesa College, Angel René Wilson balances rigorous academics with his roles as a performer, writer, and founder of MARTYR, a local music and arts production company. He is currently working on his debut album, a book, and a short film, all set for release in 2025, while planning to transfer to UCLA in the fall. Aaron Bowen, a Southern California native, blends acoustic jazz and folk with a European flair, evoking Django Reinhardt and Paul Simon. With four generations of musicians in his family, Aaron's decade-long career as a songwriter and producer has flourished. Besides performing and producing, he builds unique electric guitars, inspired by his mentor at High Spirit Guitars in San Diego. Aaron's mission is to create and share authentic music and instruments, inspiring others to be true to themselves. Francis Blume, a singer/songwriter from Vista, CA, crafts a vintage sound that transports listeners to a nostalgic era. Drawing inspiration from icons like Roy Orbison and Elvis, his music blends heartfelt emotion with the charm of the 1950s and 60s. Known for his crooning style and evocative performances, Blume captures the essence of a bygone time, offering a refreshing and timeless musical experience.
