  • On Friday, August 29, Songwriter Sanctuary is proud to feature three original acts in the round: Lexi Pulido, Claire King, and Hailey Wetzel. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. Doors 6:30 p.m., Music 7 p.m.) With four shows left in the 2025 season, it’s not too late to discover what has become one of San Diego’s greatest listening room experiences! About the Artists Lexi Pulido is a boundary-pushing vocalist, composer, guitarist, teacher, and more - known for blending experimental jazz, bossa nova, and theatrical alt-pop. Through projects like the avant-jazz quintet Kilikili, the internationally acclaimed Kate Bush tribute band Baby Bushka, and the genre-blurring Nu Moods jam series, she’s helped shape San Diego’s creative music scene while fostering community through her studio space, Tenam Studio. Hailey Wetzel is a folky, soulful, and jazz-tinged songwriter whose music blends heartfelt storytelling with rich, timeless melodies. Inspired by artists like Alice Phoebe Lou, Olivia Dean, and Maggie Rogers, her sound carries an honest warmth and rhythmic ease. After a cross-country move, she’s spent the past two years rooted in San Diego, becoming an active voice in the local music community. With a voice that feels both intimate and expansive, Hailey crafts songs that linger—emotive, melodic, and deeply human. Claire King is a San Diego based singer-songwriter and spoken word performer whose music draws influence from the folk revival of the 1960s and 70s, indie folk, jazz, and soul. Her sound is infused with the characteristics of artists like Jim Croce, Labbi Siffre, the Fleet Foxes, and Norah Jones. With poetic and whimsical lyrics, much of Claire’s music centers around her connection to nature, architecture, and personal experiences in love and mental health. Songwriter Sanctuary is committed to prioritizing consent and will continue to model and encourage this practice in our community. • Get ready to immerse yourself in the mesmerizing sounds of Chancha Via Circuito at El After Social Club! This event promises to be a night to remember. Argentine Pedro Canales, aka DJ/producer Chancha Via Circuito, is one of the pioneers of the digital cumbia genre: mashed-up, remixed dance-club reinterpretations of Afro-Colombian melodies and rhythms. Despite always having an ear to the dancefloor, Canale's beats are carefully placed within the richly textured sonic landscapes of exotic sounds collected in his travels across South America. Joining him are San Diego's own Cumbia Machin, blending electronic beats with the roots of traditional cumbia for a high-energy live performance, and Divina Jasso, whose soulful voice and genre-defying sound add a powerful and heartfelt layer to the night. Together, they create a dynamic lineup that celebrates the diversity and evolution of Latin American music. Bad Vibes Good Friends on Facebook / Instagram

  • Let’s face it - talking about death and dying is still a bit taboo in our culture. But how can you make informed decisions about end-of-life when clear, honest information is so hard to come by? That’s where we come in. Join our panel of end-of-life professionals for a laid-back Q&A session where no question is too basic, or too taboo. We’re here to bring transparency to death care - one real conversation at a time. Our panel of end-of-life experts, includes a licensed funeral director, crematory operator and embalmer, death doulas, death educators, and guides who are passionate about bringing transparency to the funeral profession. We show up with deep respect for our work and the sacredness of death, and we invite you to show up with your curiosity. Have you ever asked yourself? Can I be buried in my backyard? Can I ask a friend to put snacks in my casket before I'm buried? What will I look like a decade after I've been embalmed? What’s the difference between a green burial and a “traditional” burial? What exactly are those ashes in my auntie's urn? Is human composting really a thing and how does it work? This is your chance to get real answers from people who live this work every day. Join us for authentic conversation about the things no one talks about (but should). We will be meeting at South Park Yoga & Wellness and they kindly request that shoes are removed in the meeting space. Thanks so much!
