UC San Diego Park & Market’s Intersections concert series is hosting local Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean music pioneer Gene Perry and his Rumba Ketumba band on Thursday, July 11 at 7 p.m. Gene Perry was born in Puerto Rico but has been a staple in the San Diego music scene since 1969, when he established a beloved Sunday jam session at the Pepper Grove Park by the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park that lasted until 1974. Gene and Rumba Ketumba blend a diverse range of music genres–from calypso and reggae to Afro-Cuban and African Diaspora–to create a culturally rich sound like no other. The passion and talent of singer-songwriter Trevor Davis are not to be missed. He seamlessly combines pop, rock, and soul to deliver well-constructed songs that are highly original. Using rich metaphors and clever play on words, he communicates to his listeners with music that is both thought provoking and meaningful. Trevor captivates his audience with a strong, soulful voice that can reach to a cutting falsetto with ease, while engaging them with witty banter and dance moves as entertaining as his music. Trevor loves abstract thoughts and double meanings. He doesn’t like to state the obvious. He loves music that makes you think but is also emotional. He says, “Honesty influences me the most." The seeds for Trevor's music were planted early. His life led him on an uneasy road. He didn't have a father and his single mother struggled to provide for his needs. His grandmother helped in raising him because his mother struggled with drugs. When he was young his mother and him attended a gospel church. This is where he would soak in the music that would come to influence him so much. He says, “Music has to have conviction. I need to believe that people actually experience what they are singing about.” Because of this, Trevor is thankful for his hard and hurtful past. He can mix his past with hope, which gives him a larger spectrum to work with in his songwriting. Since Trevor started playing the independent music scene 10 years ago, his fan base has grown immensely. Less than two years from writing his first song, he routinely played packed out shows in San Diego. He has received radio airplay and has started touring as often as he can. All the time spent on the road and playing shows has allowed Trevor to craft his abilities and truly create his own sound. Known world wide as The Queen of Boogie Woogie, The Sultana of Swing, and The Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a presence on the live music scene in San Diego and the world for over 30 years. She was inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, has had a day named after her by the city of San Diego in 2008, and has won numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. She has recorded over 12 albums under her own name, securing an international award from The International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis for Best Self Produced Album (Sophisticated Ladies). She was the beehive wearing music director and longtime pianist for blues diva Candye Kane, through the 90s, appearing on many of her albums, touring world wide (France, Germany, England, The Czech Republic, Turkey, South Africa, Australia, and more) as well as all over the US and parts of Canada. Sue has also toured Switzerland, Russia, The Netherlands, and Argentina under her own name. She had a radio show for 3 years on San Diego's local Jazz station KSDS 88.3FM, and now hosts a podcast called "The Motel Swing Happy Hour KSUE San Diego." Born a musical prodigy in former Yugoslavia, Mikan started his professional jazz career as a teenager whose immense talent was quickly recognised by top musicians, the audiences and music critics alike. Throughout the '80s he remained a major feature on the thriving Yugoslav jazz scene. In the early '90s, however, he decided to pursue bigger musical challenges, at first in New York, and ten years later in San Diego, where he regularly shares the stage with the likes of Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Allison Adams-Tucker, Chuck McPherson, Bob Magnusson, Rob Thorsen, Jamie Shadowlight, and many other notable performers. On piano or synthesizer, Mikan's fiery performances continue to thrill and excite his audiences. He connects jazz fans in many different settings, from concert halls to small clubs to street corners.
