Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (Includes 1/2 hour lunch break) March 18 (1 day; 3.5 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio In this workshop you will have a wonderful and rare opportunity to draw two models together! We will have a 20-minute warmup, and then the models will take one long pose. Proportion and sighting will be emphasized, and students will have individual attention from the instructor. You may bring any material (drawing or painting) that you would like to use—excluding oil paints. Butcher paper and charcoal will be provided. The instructor will also bring a variety of drawing materials to try and to play with. We will take a break in the middle, so bring your lunch. Thursday, 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. March 20 (1 Day, 4.5 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Paint from a beautiful still life inspired by spring flowers! This is a one-day intensive workshop focusing on painting flowers alla prima. Students will learn about composition by designing and setting up a floral still life. We will take a closer look at the structure of flowers and techniques for painting them. A fun, fast study, and an excellent opportunity to develop painting skills and study floral painting in depth. The workshop will conclude with group critique. For oil painters of all levels. Materials: 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” canvas or linen panel; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, size 2, 4, and 6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail, size 2–4. This class will explore the range of techniques possible when using acrylics, with emphasis on saturated color and creativity. Students will be encouraged to paint freely and spontaneously. Materials: Paint: Fast-drying acrylics are recommended, although students may opt for the “open” (slow-drying) type if they prefer. Brand names include Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht, and Winsor & Newton. Colors: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Naphthol Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Other useful colors: Brilliant Purple, Dioxazine Purple, Hookers Green Deep Hue Permanent. The first six colors and Titanium White are a must-have. Any other colors the student may have are encouraged. Brushes: Brights, #2, #4, #6. (Winsor & Newton University brand is good.); any bristle brush students may have. Supports: Small canvas panels, 5” x 7”, 6” x 8”, 8” x 8”, 8” x 10.” These can be purchased at Michaels (quite inexpensive and good quality). In this comprehensive class, students will learn the intricate art of staining porcelain and using colored clay to craft stunning patterns and one-of-a-kind pieces. The class will cover all aspects of the technique from coloring and preparing porcelain, learning how to build a variety of patterns and learning how to form and structure pieces. This course is designed for both beginners and intermediate ceramic enthusiasts incorporating a selection of hand-building techniques as well as tips for wheel-throwing with the patterns. All students receive one month of free membership at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course.
