Kneecap, three young men from Northern Ireland who rap in Irish, has risen to prominence in recent years, with controversy surrounding its shows and political statements.

"Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" examines the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during WWII through the lens of the Garden of Remembrance (2000 - 2002), a permanent public art memorial created by Ruth Asawa and others on San Francisco State University’s campus, honoring the resilience of this community. The artworks in the exhibition range from traditional to experimental in various media and explore ancestry, family histories, lived experiences, and painful memories resulting from Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The exhibition includes Mark Baugh-Sasaki, Ruka Kashiwagi, Paul Kitagaki Jr., emerita professor Wendy Maruyama, Lisa Solomon and TT Takemoto. "Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" is co-organized by the SDSU Art Galleries and San Francisco State University’s Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibition is co-curated by Fine Arts Gallery Director Sharon E. Bliss and SFSU Lecturer in Art and Curator for the Fine Arts Gallery Kevin B. Chen. Major support for this exhibition has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from the Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Carmen Winant is a Professor in the Department of Art at Ohio State University, where she is the Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art, and an affiliated faculty member in Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies. Winant’s work poses a challenge to the ways that we understand women’s power, pleasure, labor, healing, and liberation to function, querying the aesthetic and political legacy of second-wave feminism. Winant’s appropriative installations and artist's books grapple with this question for all of its contradictory impulses: the awe of living in a revolutionary moment, a shared preoccupation with the female body as a zone of political strife, cognizance of the racial and class-based limitations of the second-wave movement; the mine- and not-mine nature of historical legacy. In using found photographs, Winant acts upon primary evidence (rather than indexical reference); the images incorporated into her work contend directly with the complex notion of socio-political inheritance. Winant has taught in Ohio prisons through The Ohio Prison Education Exchange Project (OPEEP) has also served as the Dean of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2013-2015); and is a 2019 Guggenheim fellow in photography. With a main focus on functional pottery, beginner students will learn how to use the equipment in the studio and how to use the wheel while more advanced students will further use the wheel as a tool to create work made partially or entirely from thrown forms. All students will be encouraged to experiment with surface and altering techniques to transform their work from pots to functional works of art. Students will leave the class with finished work they can use at home that’s dishwasher safe! Our 21st concert season concludes with a special treat, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major. The soloist is David Savage, PSO’s Principal Bassoonist and one of San Diego’s most accomplished woodwind musicians. Mozart’s concerto is a rare gem, full of expressive range and technical brilliance that requires a true professional. Mr. Savage brings exactly the artistry and experience this piece demands. Virtuoso organist Jonas Nordwall performs popular standards on the Theatre Organ Society’s 4-manual, 24-rank “mighty Wurlitzer.” Nordwall is equally skilled in presenting both classical and popular music concerts. This concert will be a showcase of the Great American Songbook. The American Theatre Organ Society named Jonas Nordwall its Organist of the Year in 1987. He has served since 1971 as organist at the First United Methodist Church of Portland, Oregon, where he is Artistic Director of Music. He led the organist staff for ten years at Portland’s Organ Grinder Pizza restaurant and is the organist for the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.
