"Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" examines the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during WWII through the lens of the Garden of Remembrance (2000 - 2002), a permanent public art memorial created by Ruth Asawa and others on San Francisco State University’s campus, honoring the resilience of this community. The artworks in the exhibition range from traditional to experimental in various media and explore ancestry, family histories, lived experiences, and painful memories resulting from Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The exhibition includes Mark Baugh-Sasaki, Ruka Kashiwagi, Paul Kitagaki Jr., emerita professor Wendy Maruyama, Lisa Solomon and TT Takemoto. "Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance" is co-organized by the SDSU Art Galleries and San Francisco State University’s Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibition is co-curated by Fine Arts Gallery Director Sharon E. Bliss and SFSU Lecturer in Art and Curator for the Fine Arts Gallery Kevin B. Chen. Fiber Fest Upcycling & Mending Fun! Sunday, June 15, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. We are excited to offer this fun Sunday workshop for Fiber Fest! Join us for a morning of creative mending in good company. Come learn simple hand sewing techniques in order to turn your damaged clothing items into a one-of-a-kind garments. In this 2-hour class with upcycling sewist Keira McGee, you will practice hand sewing stitches and have the opportunity to repair a piece of your own clothing. Please be prepared with an item or two from your closet that are in need of some mending. We suggest items such as jeans and button down shirts, but feel free to bring several options. All other materials will be provided by the instructor. This class is appropriate for ages 14 years and older. All materials included. In this introductory class led by instructors from the San Diego County Spinners, you’ll learn the fundamentals of spinning yarn using a drop spindle. We’ll start by teaching you how to draft and spin singles, and then move on to plying two singles together to create a beautiful, balanced yarn. Plus, we’ll share tips on where to find spinning supplies and resources to keep you going after class. Whether you’re completely new to spinning or just looking to refresh your skills, this hands-on class will give you a solid foundation in drop spindle spinning! The law aims to prevent officers fired by one department for bad behavior from later finding a job in another. So far, 20 officers from local departments have been decertified for offenses ranging from sexual misconduct to domestic violence to dishonesty.

The law passed several years ago allows the state to strip officers of their badges for good if they commit acts of serious misconduct. But departments, including some in San Diego County, have submitted very few — or even zero — cases for review.
