A true rarity, Vivaldi’s recently discovered, seldom performed masterpiece is set in Mexico during the Spanish conquest that led to the end of the Aztec Empire. While this 18th century opera is a highly romanticized and naive take on the historical events of over 200 years earlier, it nevertheless is surprisingly sensitive and empathetic to the tragedy of the Aztecs as they fight for their land and the survival of their culture and people. Writing can sometimes feel like a lonely endeavor, but a good read-and-critique group can help you feel supported and connected to a writing community. Friday Writers I is a read-and-critique group for all levels. This group will offer thoughtful feedback and guidance in your poetry writing endeavors. The class begins with a close read of two to three poems written by contemporary poets, followed by a few minutes of writing from a prompt. Following the free-write, we will read and critique each other's work. Artist Statement: Macedonio Arteaga Jr. is a visionary artist, educator, and community leader whose work bridges cultural heritage, social justice, and artistic expression. As the founder and artistic director of Teatro Izcalli, a Chicano comedy troupe, Macedonio uses humor and storytelling to challenge stereotypes, amplify underrepresented voices, and foster cultural pride. His creative work extends beyond the stage, with published plays and poetry that inspire new generations to find their own artistic voices. Through decades of dedicated service, Macedonio has brought the transformative power of the arts to underserved communities. He has served as an Artist-in-Residence at the Sherman Heights Community Center and the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, creating opportunities for others to engage with and grow through the arts. His initiatives, such as “Círculo de Hombres,” have addressed critical social issues like violence prevention, mentorship, and cultural awareness in schools. Recognized with prestigious honors, including the California Arts Council Legacy Artist Award in 2021, Macedonio’s contributions to the arts and culture are now celebrated at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, which is proud to host his first museum art installation. Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran. With over ten releases and a resume that includes touring with Jerry Marotta and opening for legends like Steve Hackett and Al DiMeola, Griesgraber’s set promises a diverse and compelling lead-in to the night’s headliners.
