In this class the face is the focus. Using different techniques and mediums, we will find fun ways to approach an often-daunting subject. Students will be encouraged to bring photos of family, friends—even pets. We will discuss the best kinds of photos to use and how to use the ones you have even if they aren’t the best quality. There will be a model for one session, and we will try self-portraiture. This is an interesting way to improve your skills, find some new ones, and have fun while you are at it. Materials: A 9” x 12” pad of mixed-media paper; soft vine charcoal (willow is the best); woodless graphite pencil, 6B, 8B, or 9B (the higher the number the better); pencil sharpener; kneaded eraser. Concert Hour is a music enrichment series presented on the campus of Palomar College for our students, staff, and community by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. Enjoy a range of exciting artists and musicians in the beautiful Howard Brubeck Theatre or Performance Lab D-10. The program is presented weekly during the Fall and Spring Semesters at 1 p.m. and ends at approximately 2 p.m. Admission and Parking are FREE. She is also a Professor of Music at Palomar College, where she has been on the faculty since 2000. Some recent compositions include Running and Reflection (composed for the Heartland Marimba Quartet), Flow (For the New York Composers Circle), and Awakening (Cal Poly Pomona Piano Ensemble, directed by Nadia Schpachenko). Join us for the reception for Reflecting on Ruth Asawa and the Garden of Remembrance. Mix and mingle with the attending artists throughout the evening. Reflecting examines the legacy of Japanese American incarceration during WWII through the lens of the Garden of Remembrance (2000 - 2002), a permanent public art memorial created by Ruth Asawa and others on San Francisco State University’s campus, honoring the resilience of this community. The artworks in the exhibition range from traditional to experimental in various media and explore ancestry, family histories, lived experiences, and painful memories resulting from Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. The exhibition includes Mark Baugh-Sasaki, Ruka Kashiwagi, Paul Kitagaki Jr., emerita professor Wendy Maruyama, Lisa Solomon and TT Takemoto. Playwright Keiko Green's "Empty Ride" follows the story of a woman who returns home to a small town in Japan, after the 2011 tsunami, to take care of her father — and continue his taxi route. This play was commissioned by The Old Globe is on stage Feb. 13 through March 2.
