  • Belly up & Casbah Present Puma Blue Puma Blue is the alias of singer/songwriter & producer Jacob Allen, currently based between London & Atlanta. Originally finding recognition in the South-East London music scene for his falsetto vocal and dark, lo-fi textures, Puma Blue's music is noted for a blend of sensual grooves and haunting, nocturnal ambience. His live shows are well regarded and often repeat-attended, performing with a band of close friends from home and blending jazz-influenced improvisation with a vocal energy often likened to Jeff Buckley. After early online acclaim with a couple of SoundCloud demos, he first gained wider attention with his EPs Swum Baby (2017) and Blood Loss (2018). His debut album 'In Praise Of Shadows' was released in February 2021 via Blue Flowers. For more information visit: musicboxsd.com Stay Connected on Facebook

  • The Fleet Science Center welcomes the new school year with an Educator Open House on Thursday, September 14. This inspiring evening at the Fleet Science Center invites all San Diego County educators to explore the galleries, including the wildly popular The Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience, engage in professional development opportunities, get creative in the Fleet’s makerspace Studio X, and importantly, preview the Fleet’s latest addition to its very in-demand Don’t Try This At Home science assembly show, Scientific Serenade. Scientific Serenade, suitable for grades kindergarten through six, focuses on sound waves, exploring the relationships between pitch and frequency, amplitude and volume, and speed and intensity. Fleet education professionals lead an investigation and visualization of sound through participants’ eyes and ears in this high-energy, louder-than-life show. Students (and educators) can: Explore the components of sound and how they all combine to create the beautiful (and not-so-beautiful) sounds that we hear every day. Experience the use of a wide array of items in engaging experiments to experience sound in a whole new way. Hear that this show is simply too loud to try at home! Educators also will get a chance to connect with each other as well as members of the Fleet education department about resources, offerings and special events that can make their classroom and school activities even more engaging. Educators are welcome to bring up to two guests, including children. Light refreshments will be served. The Fleet Science Center’s myriad education offerings are just one more way the Fleet fulfills its mission of connecting everyone in San Diego to the power of science. • Belly up & Crssd present Stavroz and DJ TA. Hailing from the land of compromise in the heart of Europe, the four friends of Stavroz found each other in the east of Flanders. In its inception, IJsbrand De Wilde & Gert Beazar focussed mainly on playing DJ sets and creating music in which they loved colliding worlds. Only a few years later they hooked up with Maxim Helincks & Pieter De Meester to expand their DJ activities to a performing band and continued to try and find an unbeaten path in electronic music. This culminated in their delicately acoustic, organic and cinematic approach to electronic music. As a result they were awarded second place for "best producer" and "best breakthrough artist" in national awards for Belgium's electronic music scene. • The Borrego Art Institute kicks off its 2023-2024 gallery season Oct. 7 with "The Art of Flora, Fauna and Earth’s Elements," showcasing our world’s astonishing plants, animals and elements. New and returning regional artists will present their work in a variety of mediums in the main gallery. In the north gallery, "Heat Echoes: Infrared Landscapes and Other Works" by photographer Jerry Berkstresser will feature scenes from the Eastern Sierra and the Sonoran and Mojave deserts. This exhibit includes traditional black and white and infrared photography. Without the distraction of color, Berkstresser urges the viewer to focus on other aspects—shapes, patterns and the overall composition of the photograph. Infrared photography takes it a step further. Beyond the color red, the infrared spectrum extends outside the range of human perception. Heat Echoes opens a window into that spectrum. The opening reception is October 7 from 4-7 p.m. The shows run October 7-29.
