Bach Collegium San Diego Presents Knock out Sounds with Reginald Mobley The Return of Bach to Bop Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, is performing with countertenor d'Amore Reginald Mobley who showcases the thin lines between the worlds of baroque and jazz. The repertoire, from J.S. Bach and Purcell to Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, explores the world of improvisation, ornamentation, pulsating bass lines, and most importantly, groove. “When exploring the world of Baroque music and where it intersects with jazz, who better to lead the way than one of the great countertenors of this generation, Reginald Mobley,” said BCSD Musical Director Ruben Valenzuela. “We're incredibly fortunate to have him back with BCSD after the success of Bach to Bop from a few years ago. Get ready...from Purcell and Bach to Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington!" BCSD partnered with local schools to develop an education curriculum surrounding this program and the similarities and differences (and historical timeline of the genres) of baroque and jazz music. The pilot program is in development but BCSD is planning on having the students perform a piece or two on the concert program as a culmination of this special program. The Secret Garden Tour of La Jolla offers a rare invitation for the public to stroll behind the gates of some of La Jolla’s loveliest secluded gardens. A drawing's most profound potential lies in its ability to shape how we perceive and understand the world around us. Few means of expression can rival its directness. Drawing is personal, immediate, intentional, and reveals an artist’s presence of mind. The Judith Harris Art Gallery at the Central Library is pleased to present The Drawing Show, a 25th anniversary exhibition championing skilled San Diego artists. The Visual Arts Program founder, Mark Elliot Lugo, curated the first inaugural Drawing Show which has included over 92 local artists in invitationals over the years. Lugo believed drawing is not just a skill, but an exercise in teaching the eye to “see” correctly— a process that transcends mere observation and encourages a deeper, more insightful perception. This year’s invitational features Celeste Byers, Hugo Crosthwaite, Steve Gibson, Amanda Kazemi, Neil Kendricks, Joshua Morino, Annalise Neil, David Peña, Melanie Taylor, and Eden de la Vara—ten local artists who show us how they “see” through their exemplary mark making. From traditional figure renderings to imaginative constructs of landscape and abstraction, drawing remains a space of open experimentation, where the hand decides whether a piece is meant to convey deeper meaning or exist for mere play. Each mark sends a message—where past, present, and futures coexist. The Drawing Show invites the viewer to engage with drawing as more than just a tool or technique—it's a vital method of communication. A narrative serving a profound social function. As transcenDANCE looks back at our beginnings, we connect to the tree imagery of our roots, our strong foundation, and the dreams that have manifested from our collective work. Our creative community nourishes us, allows us a space for healing, and supports us in our flourishing. Almost 20 years ago, transcenDANCE was co-founded by 12 teens and 2 adults who sat under a tree at Hoover High School. Rooted in our strong bonds and love of dance, we dreamed of what transcenDANCE could be for ourselves, each other, and our community. As we reflect on this origin story, we have invited our current CREATE students to explore what grounds them, what nourishes them, and what dreams they want to bring to life. Rooted & Dreaming brings together dance, poetry and art co-created by CREATE students and professional artists that will inspire audiences and celebrate creative expression by young artists of San Diego. Concert Hour is a music enrichment series presented on the campus of Palomar College for our students, staff, and community by the Palomar College Performing Arts Department. This Week’s Performing Arts Will Be Located in Performance Lab D -10 Alyze Dreiling was born in Detroit, Michigan. She began her violin studies with Mischa Mischakoff .The Detroit Symphony and the Music Study Club of Metropolitan Detroit sponsored her education with Mischakoff. Ms. Dreiling graduated from Indiana University where she studied with Josef Gingold. She holds a BM in Violin Performance from Indiana University and MA from United States International University with an emphasis on Orchestral Performance. Ms. Dreiling was an invited semi- finalist in the European Union Conducting Competition in 2018. She has attended masterclasses with Zoltan Rozsnyai, Gunther Neuhold,, Neil Thomson and Dr. Scott Weiss and Philip Greenberg. Ms. Dreiling was the founding Artistic Director and Conductor of Classics for Kids and currently is Artistic Director and the Emeritus Conductor of YPO Festival Orchestra, Soloists Ensemble and Soloists Sinfonietta and was recently awarded 3nd prize in the American Prize Competition in the conductor of youth orchestra division.
