Make a Turkey Wing Hand Broom! Sunday, January 12, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. A Turkey Wing hand broom is an epic example of Appalachian folk art. It could be considered a functional tool or a decorated art piece. These brooms are made with natural broomcorn. Instructor AB will teach you the traditional techniques for binding and shaping the broomcorn, which is made from sorghum, to create a fun and unique experience…others call it a spiritual occurrence. Students will be inspired to create like famous artists such as Kieth Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, and Faith Ringgold, whose legacy of art brought people and communities together through Social and Environmental Justice. What to expect at ArtReach HQ: What to bring: Please pack a water bottle, lunch, and snacks for your child. A water refill station is available onsite. When: Art camp will be Monday, December 23 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Select the Day Camp and Extended Care options for pickup at 5 p.m. Please arrive no more than 15 minutes before class. Where: We are located at 1065 University Ave. San Diego, CA 92103 (on the corner of University and Vermont). Parking: We have limited space in our parking lot for drop off and pick up. Become a Master Composter! Join us at the beautiful Water Conservation Garden to gain in-depth composting knowledge to expand your sustainable gardening practices. You can earn a certificate of completion after attending all 5 weeks, then go on to receive the Master Composter certification and badge after completing the additional requirements! Meet new people in this fun, hands-on course. Class size is limited. Attendees must preregister. After completing this 5-week course you will have a better understanding of how to: * Minimize your carbon footprint and reduce your methane emissions by keeping food and yard waste out of the landfill. * Create natural nutrient-rich soil amendments with your food and yard waste that help your garden grow. * Avoid using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. * Reduce water use and increase water retention. Compost increases your soil’s water-holding capacity and improves water retention. The Master Composter course provides training in the art and science of composting through lectures, demonstrations, and a field trip. The course covers the following topics: * In-depth traditional composting and the basics of composting with worms (vermicomposting) * Compost bin building and troubleshooting (in teams!) * The microbiology of composting, including the role of fungi and bacteria * Bokashi fermentation for saving food scraps to compost * Macro decomposers in your compost pile * A tour of the Water Conservation Garden’s composting exhibit * The environmental impacts of composting * … and much more!
