The McCain Fire in the rural southeastern reaches of San Diego County was 87% contained Friday after burning 1,595 acres, officials said.

Firefighters gained ground on the 1,362-acre wildfire in southeast San Diego County, now 50% contained, after it sparked from a car crash near Jacumba Hot Springs.

The blaze erupted about 3:30 p.m. Monday on the westbound side of the freeway, near McCain Valley Road in Jacumba, according to Cal Fire.

Flames engulfed a vehicle on Interstate 8 in the far southeastern reaches of the San Diego area Monday and spread into adjacent brushy terrain, prompting an evacuation of a rural recreation area.

In its 18th year, the Borrego Art Institute’s Annual Plein Air Invitational promises another outstanding exhibition of plein air paintings focusing on the unique beauty and environmental significance of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Borrego Valley. The exhibition will present a rich diversity of plein air paintings by a select group of 14 artists working in oils, watercolor and pastels, all producing work for the show during the week of March 4 – 9. Returning artists include Margaret Larlham, Geoffrey Allen and Natasha Isenhour. New work will go up daily in the main gallery March 4-8, and the gallery hours will be extended to 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. The awards and reception will be held Sat. March 9, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. The show will be up through April 14. The Invitational will once again be curated by Kay Levie, Rick J. On Saturday, March 9, 2024, join fellow San Diegans and participate in the Screen Your Gut - Save Your Butt 5K Race/Walk in Mission Bay, to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, the 2nd deadliest form of cancer, and to promote its prevention and early detection. Screen Your Gut - Save Your Butt is sponsored by C4, a statewide, all volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to save lives and reduce suffering from colorectal cancer in all Californians.
