Metro ReporterAs the KPBS metro reporter, Andrew Bowen covers a broad range of issues across San Diego County, including local government, housing, transportation, infrastructure and climate change. His reporting at KPBS has won numerous awards, including the 2019 Gloria Penner Award for Political Affairs Reporting from the San Diego chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the 2018 Walk the Walk Award from Circulate San Diego. Before moving to San Diego, Andrew worked for six years as a freelance translator, radio reporter, and TV news producer in Germany. His work for the German international public broadcaster Deutsche Welle had him covering local, national, and international stories across Europe. He also worked as a producer and reporter for the English-language website of Der Spiegel, Germany's largest news magazine. Andrew is originally from Santa Rosa, California. He holds a bachelor of science degree in journalism with a minor in Spanish from Northwestern University. He speaks fluent Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Gary Kreep, who was censured by the state Commission on Judicial Performance and rated as "lacking qualifications" by the San Diego County Bar Association, secured the most votes in the June 5 primary, at 31.6 percent. -
KPBS Midday EditionThe California Supreme Court is set to decide on the legality of Proposition B, San Diego's 2012 voter-approved pension reform measure. Unions representing city employees argue then-Mayor Jerry Sanders violated labor negotiation rules in his support for the measure. -
A campaign mailer sent out by the conservative Lincoln Club violated state laws requiring the disclosure of who paid for it. The club says it was an "internal miscommunication" and that it has reported itself to state authorities. -
A proposed budget for SANDAG, the countywide transportation agency, contains delays for several bike projects. SANDAG has come under criticism lately because of its slow rollout of its regional bikeways program. -
San Diego City Council members have extended the operating contracts for three tent shelters spearheaded by Mayor Kevin Faulconer. The council is increasingly skeptical of the tents, however, as data shows they are falling far short of their goals. -
The proposed middle-income housing density bonus would allow developers to build more homes on a parcel of land if they agree to reserve a portion of them for middle-income earners.
