Camp Pendleton Marine Sgt. Jared R. Hale was behind the wheel on Feb. 14, 2012 when his Dodge Stratus slammed into a tree in Dana Point, killing his three passengers - all fellow Pendleton Marines. A retired Marine Corps bomb-sniffing dog with a local connection is the subject of a new book, “Top Dog: The Story of Marine Hero Lucca.” Lucca lost one of her paws in an improvised explosive device blast in Afghanistan back in 2012, and she spent her physical rehabilitation at Camp Pendleton before being medically retired by the Marines.
