The Department of Defense has identified the U.S. Air Force pilot killed Dec. 1 as Capt. William H. Dubois, 30, of New Castle, Colorado.
Dubois lost his life when his F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed "near a coalition air base" in the Middle East.
According to the Air Force Times:
The jet was tasked to bomb targets in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the campaign against the Islamic State group, according to CENTCOM.
The command would not say if the jet was headed to Iraq or Syria.
“Apparently there were some maintenance problems on takeoff. It turned around and unfortunately was not able to land.”
NBC News has reported Dubois was attempting to return to an airstrip in Jordan when his plane went down.
An Air Force investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
Dubois was assigned to the 77th Fighter Squadron, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.
