One Book, One San Diego

The play, which is based on the novel by Luis Alberto Urrea, follows a group of Mexican teens who travel to the U.S. on a mission to save their hometown from drug criminals.

As we begin our search for the 2017 One Book, One San Diego selection, we asked local representatives from major publishing houses, including Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, and MacMillan, what books they recommend.

"Nieve en la Habana" es un bello libro de Carlos Eire, lleno de memorias nostálgicas de su infancia en Cuba, el país al cual dejo en 1962 a los 11 años. Usando humor, realismo mágico y lenguaje lírico, Eire pinta un retrato de una infancia destrozada para siempre por la Revolución Cubana.

Inspired by the the "custody battle" over Cuban student Elián González, the 2003 memoir by a Yale University professor traces the author's own experiences growing up in Castro's Cuba.

KPBS is thrilled to kick off its One Book, One San Diego 10th Anniversary Celebration with today’s unveiling of the 2016 book selection, “Waiting for Snow in Havana” by National Book Award-winning author, Carlos Eire. Eire (pronounced “Air”) will be interviewed today at 12 PM on KPBS Midday Edition.

One Book One San Diego es una colaboración entre KPBS, la Biblioteca Pública de San Diego, la Biblioteca del Condado de San Diego, la Asociación de Bibliotecarios de Baja California (ABIBAC) y muchas organizaciones más lados de la frontera.

Students in grades 4, 8 and 10 are invited to submit an essay on suggested topics for a chance to win great prizes. Deadline for submissions is 3:00 PM on Friday, December 18, 2015. Winners will be announced in the spring of 2016.

William Joyce is the author of the KPBS One Book Kids selection for 2015, "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore." KPBS spoke to him about his book in November.

Because KPBS believes you are never too young to learn to love to read, the One Book for Kids Committee selected a companion book to "Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón for children ten and under, "The Fanstastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" by William Joyce. KPBS also partnered with Reach Out and Read-San Diego to select a companion book for our youngest readers, "It's a Little Book," by Lane Smith.
