A new play at the San Diego Repertory Theater follows the adventures of a group of Mexican teenagers who make their way to the U.S., but not for the reasons one might expect.
Inspired by the film “The Magnificent Seven,” the teens are on a mission to bring back seven magnificent Mexican men who can help protect their hometown against drug dealers.
Into The Beautiful North
When: March 30-April 23
Where: Lyceum Stage
Cost: $20-$48
“Into The Beautiful North,” is based on the novel of the same name by poet and novelist Luis Alberto Urrea. The book was the 2012 selection for KPBS’ One Book, One San Diego program.
Now, playwright Karen Zacaías has adapted the story for the stage.
“I think a lot of times the story of Mexicans coming to the United States has been painted with a very broad and very simple brush. And I think what Luis Alberto does so great in his book, and what we hope to capture in the play, is the humanity and uniqueness in every person's story,” Zacaías said.
Zacaías, who immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico as a young girl, talked about the play's local connections and what it was like to adapt the story for theater, Tuesday on Midday Edition.
