Airport initiative campaigns prepare for take off

The campaigns for and against San Diego's Airport Initiative are preparing for take off as election season approaches. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Supporters and opponents of the initiative to seek a new commercial airport site at Miramar will present their arguments before a committee of San Diego's Economic Development Corporation today. Both groups will lobby for the EDC's endorsement.

Two political action committees opposed to the initiative are called Support Our Military-No on Miramar and Taxpayers for Responsible Planning. Retired military and defense contractors spearhead the groups. They say they're up against a well-funded business lobby. The PAC in favor of Miramar as the region's future airport is called Citizens to Protect the Economy.

This group, with business and development backing, has to convince the public they are not against the Marines, but hope for a mutually-agreeable solution.

Both sides have to contend with the Airport Authority's confusing ballot initiative that calls for the Marines to share the base, but acknowledges joint use is not feasible. Alison St John, KPBS News.
