S.D. City Council Takes on Big Box Regulation Debate

San Diego City Council votes this afternoon on whether to regulate big box stores and ban superstores like Walmart Superstores. Advocates for Walmart Superstores say they give customers more choices.

San Diego City Council votes this afternoon on whether to regulate big box stores and ban superstores like Walmart Superstores. Advocates for Walmart Superstores say they give customers more choices. But Dianna Spyridonidis, CEO of the Business Improvement Council of San Diego, says there is a domino effect after a Superstore comes to a neighborhood.

Spyridonidis: You have the Supercenter come in and its like pulling a thread of a sweater, and you pull and you pull and you pull the customers away from the neighborhood commercial areas until the supermarket does close and then all the other small business in the area close too. What choice do you have then? No choice but to go to the Supercenter.

San Diego City Hall is expected to be packed for the vote.
