Top Marine official in SD to oppose airport initiative

The Commanding General of the Marine Forces Pacific is in San Diego today. Lt. General John Goodman will lend his weight to the campaign against the Airport Initiative on the November ballot. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Lt. General Goodman threw a wrench in the plans of proponents of a commercial airport at Miramar, when he wrote a letter to military leaders the last month. Marine spokesman Major Jason Johnson says it confirmed the F18s at MAS Miramar will be replaced by a new supersonic aircraft, the joint strike fighter.

Johnson: "Once the Pentagon issued the guidance that the JSF would be coming to MAS Miramar, Lt. Gen. Goodman issued guidance to his commanders here at Miramar to begin preparations for the joint strike fighter. Even though its going to take place many, many years from now."
Supporters of the Airport Initiative, which points to a future commercial airport at Miramar, say the marines are hedging their bets and that the new planes could go to Yuma. Lt. General Goodman will speak on the strategic importance of Miramar at a meeting in Mission Valley tonight. Alison St John, KPBS News.
