Fearless

After achieving different measures of success in Hollywood, filmmaker Ronny Yu and star Jet Li return to Asia for the period martial arts film Fearless (opening September 22 throughout San Diego). The film is being billed as Jet Li's "final martial arts epic." But don't worry, he's not about to retire.

At this year's Comic-Con I ran a booth across the aisle from Rogue Pictures. All day long they ran trailers for their upcoming releases, which included Fearless . Every time the announcer proclaimed: "See Jet Li in his final martial arts epic," my son would go into a fit and say "why do they keep saying that, it sounds like he's retiring or dead." My son was so annoyed by this that I was forced to talk to one of the publicists and ask why they were promoting the film this way. The answer was that Jet Li had announced that this would be his last period martial arts film. But he wasn't retiring, and he wasn't swearing off action films. So Fearless is meant to be something of a swan song--no more Once Upon a Time in Chinas , no more Fong Sai Yuks , no more Tai Chi Masters no more Heroes .
