Environmental Groups Eager to Receive Prop. 84 Money

Environmental groups and government agencies are gearing up to get a share of billions of dollars for water and park projects. The money is up for grabs because voters passed Proposition 84 in November. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

Prop. 84 allows California to borrow more than $5 billion to fund projects to maintain and improve water quality. The measure also includes money for coastal restoration, forest and wildlife conservation and for urban projects that reduce energy consumption and conserve water. California Coastal Coalition Executive Director Steve Aceti says the lobbying for a share of the bond money will be intense. He says the legislature will have a big influence on how most of the money is doled out.

Aceti: The legislature won't have a say over the entire $5.4 billion. Some of it will go directly to state agencies for grant opportunities.

San Diego County's share of the grant money is $91 million.
