UC San Diego Applications Hit Record High

A record number of students have applied for the fall quarter at UC San Diego and nine other UC campuses around the state. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has details.

UC San Diego Applications Hit Record High

A record number of students are applying for college in the UC system this fall., and that includes UC San Diego. The news comes as the colleges are anticipates cuts in state funding to deal with the budget deficit. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps with more.

More than 57,000 people applied to be UCSD undergraduates this fall. That's a 6 percent increase over last year. The San Diego campus comes in Number 3, behind UCLA and UC Berkeley .

Systemwide, applications are up nearly 60 percent from a decade ago. Tuition and fees have gone up, but so have the number of high-school graduates, ready for college.

Of course, there isn't space for all those college hopefuls. The UC does say every eligible student will get in somewhere, even though Governor Schwarzenegger threatens a 10 percent cut to education funding this year.
