Californians Worried About High Healthcare Costs

The high cost of healthcare is taking its toll on Californians' well-being. A new survey reveals more than one out of three Californians say they neglected needed care last year. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

The California HealthCare Foundation survey polled more than a thousand people in the state. It included Californians with and without insurance.

About half said they worried about being able to afford care when they're sick. More than half were concerned about having enough coverage after retirement.

The survey showed high costs caused many people to forgo a doctor-recommended treatment, a medical test, or their annual physical. And those who neglected care were more likely to visit an emergency room, or get admitted to a hospital.

The poll showed more people were taking steps to save money on prescriptions last year than they did three years ago. About a third asked their doctor or pharmacist for a less expensive medication.
