 San Diego city council decided not to chose a new President until four newly elected members are seated next month. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Scott Peters served as the city of San Diego’s first council President under the strong mayor form of government that began in 2006

Peters tried to get a vote this week on who should succeed him, before the newly elected council members are sworn in. 

Peters : I will tell you that I personally had hoped that there would be a consensus among the council members who would be seated by now so that I could start someone in this chair ahead of time, and I realize that this consensus did not emerge.

6 of the 8 people on the new city council are democrats, but it is not clear who that majority will pick to be their next president.

The city council president is an important role… setting  the council’s agenda and acting as a check and balance to the mayor’s powers.

Picking their new president will be one of the first orders of business when the new council is sworn in December 8 th
