Maureen Cavanaugh:  Famous architect Irving Gill dotted San Diego with structures that recall an exciting time in the history of architecture. He was on the scene when American architects were in transition from the arts and crafts movement into what would eventually be called modernism. In fact, Photographer Marvin Rand called Irving Gill the "first modernist."

Marvin Rand, one of the nation's foremost architectural photographers, died last week at his Marina del Rey home, at the age of 84. One of his last works was a book of photographs called "Irving Gill, Architect." Tom Fudge interviewed Rand back in 2006...here's that interview.
