San Diego Lawmakers Sound Off on U.S. Role in Gaza War

Audio

Aired 4/19/09

As the war in Gaza rages on, San Diego area lawmakers sound off about what the U-S role should be in bringing peace to the region. Tanya Snyder reports.

Minutes after Republican Duncan Hunter Junior was sworn in as his father's successor in Congress, he said he supported a cease-fire in Gaza only if it's in Israel's best interests.

I think we ought to support Israel in every way possible here. And that's it. I think that they've taken enough, and they're doing what they have the right to do as a sovereign nation.

Democrat Bob Filner sees it differently.

Filner: This is madness what's going on. There's got to be an immediate cease fire, and then hopefully a true negotiated peace.

He says he hopes the new president will personally go to the region.

Filner: Only the United States can get in there and negotiate with both sides and I hope Mr. Obama does.

President Bush says Israel is justified in stepping up its attacks. Obama has refrained from commenting.
